The Amazon is packed with discoveries for curious travelers. The rainforest that follows the mighty river flowing through South America is teeming with towering canopies of green and home to thousands of species that can only be found in this unique ecosystem – all nestled in a region of the world that is famous for its vibrant culture and history. Aboard Crystal Serenity’s October 27 “Amazon Escape” voyage, natural adventures abound ashore. But, on board, it’s those guests with intrepid palates that will be treated to a true journey of discovery.

Chef Yerika Munoz

The epic 24-day Wine & Food Festival themed sailing welcomes a trio of culinary and libation masters for a bevy of interactive demos, wine pairings, and cocktail-making sessions. Leading the feast of flavors for the sailing will be Yerika Munoz, executive chef and general manager of Mexico City’s award-winning Astrid and Gaston restaurant. For some returning Crystal Serenity guests, Yerika may be a familiar face, as she once graced the galleys of the ship with her considerable culinary skills.

While Yerika’s passion for cuisine was cultivated at an early age – she often favored time in the kitchen with her mother and grandmother over time on the playground – it was during her years with Crystal Cruises that her repertoire of international specialties and influences expanded. As her dedication and mastery of cooking brought her through the ranks of the onboard team, Yerika eventually became Sr. Sous Chef, overseeing dozens of other chefs and creating flavors inspired by her travels.

This same skill and dedication is what drew the attention of star chef Gaston Acurio when he sought to open his Peruvian restaurant in Mexico City, Astrid y Gastón.  There, Yerika has further displayed her creativity and flair for flavor on a globally recognized level.

Even if Yerika’s face is not familiar to you, her talents certainly are. Several of her creations are still served on board, and we’re looking forward to featuring new specialties during this exploration through South America. Complementing Yerika’s colorful dishes and entertaining demos will be wine pairing and tasting sessions with internationally acclaimed wine educator and James Beard Achievement Award winner, Kevin Zraly, as well as cocktail-making sessions and creative libations from master mixologist Bridget Albert.

Embark on this delectable voyage through the Amazon, Brazil and West Indies and savor the adventure.
