‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Hits the Stage in 2021
Guests aboard Crystal Serenity’s “Accent on the Lesser Antilles” voyage last December were treated to a taste of Sir Elton John’s highly-anticipated Broadway production of The Devil Wears Prada, set to open at the CIBC Theatre in Chicago in the summer of 2021. Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum brought the show’s creative team aboard, including director Anna Shapiro, set designer Christine Jones and actress Beth Leavel, who portrays the role of Miranda Priestly, made famous by Meryl Streep in the 2006 film adaptation of the best-selling book. Crystal guests were presented with a rarely-seen perspective of the detailed creative process that goes into bringing a story to the stage, which included a Q & A session and two of the show’s brand new songs written by musical genius Elton John and dazzling newcomer Shaina Taub.
Each special guest shared some insight into their particular crafts. McCollum (Rent Pulitzer-winning producer, Avenue Q, In the Heights, Mrs. Doubtfire, Something Rotten!, Motown: The Musical, La Boheme), Shapiro (August: Osage County Tony Award-winning director), Jones (American Idiot Tony Award winning designer, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Pts I & II, Spring Awakening), and Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone, Baby It’s You, Mamma Mia!) all collaborated on Crystal’s stages to bring guests “backstage” for their discussions on the universally entertaining story of powerful fashion editor Miranda Priestly and her idealistic new assistant, Andy.
