Soak in the Health Benefits of Travel in 2018
Here we are again, at that precarious time of year that resolutions are made, before they are internally negotiated and often, ultimately broken. Many New Year’s resolutions fall into the same common categories: get more sleep, get more exercise, eat better and more healthfully, travel more. The last of those listed here may seem disconnected from the others but it’s simply not so. It’s science. There is a wealth of compelling scientific evidence to supporting the health benefits of travel, from the mental perks of experiencing new places, cultures and languages, to actual tangible rewards like improved bone health and decreased risk of heart disease and stress levels. And let’s not discount the effects of pure fun on the heart and soul.
Extended international travel – particularly luxury travel – invites you to indulge in countless ways. Your Crystal vacation entices you with endless pours of fine wines and premium spirits and craft cocktails, plus made-to-order waffles and some of the most artistic desserts this side of whatever ocean your ship is sailing. It would be easy to counter those heart disease risk benefits with a decadent lobster tail or two (see the aforementioned point about fun). Good news for your cardiologist: Crystal voyages offer equal measures of ways to care for your mind, body and soul as you explore the world.
For every extravagant evening spent in Prego, there is a yoga class to center you. For every extra hour spent reveling into the early morning, there is a Crystal Spa body treatment to rejuvenate you. For every moment spent snoozing poolside, there is an active adventure ashore to get you up and moving again.
This year, resolve to break the resolution rut of one of the four “big ones” and choose them all. It is our great pleasure to take you exploring in your pursuit of wellness. Here are a few starting tips:
Get more sleep. No really, the Seahorse Pool aboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity is a spectacular spot for an afternoon catnap in the sunshine. For those who seek longer stretches of REM, sleep in each day with no FOMO (see previous blog post about Fear of Missing Out), as “late risers” have options aboard Crystal Cruises. Specially timed breakfast feasts and late shore excursion departures mean more sleep with no less adventure.
Get more exercise. No excuses. Crystal ships boast expertly equipped fitness centers with the LifeFitness Pro Series® of weight training equipment, TechnoGym’s Kinesis™ resistance training machines and complete free weight area, plus outdoor “fitness gardens” so you don’t miss one sunset. Daily classes in yoga, Pilates mat, Spinning, and cardio cross training are also offered.
Not into the gym scene? Head outdoors to the Sun Deck, where paddle tennis courts make the most of open air and offer a healthy dose of friendly competition. Also outside, driving cages and putting greens offer ample space to perfect your swing, with PGA pros to help perfect your technique; and the 360-degree Promenade Deck is a rare find at sea and will allow you to literally walk on water. In fact, our exclusive WOW (Walk On Water) program utilizes weighted Walkvest® equipment for an additional challenge. The route is 0.28 miles per lap, with the added bonus of the sea breeze to cool you down.
*Fun fact: There are approximately 16 flights of stairs between the Crystal Cove and the top Sun Deck.
Eat better and more healthfully. This is entirely possible on a Crystal voyage, even one filled with tempting global specialties not traditionally found on trending diet plans. Most Crystal dining venues can accommodate virtually any dietary need, from gluten-free to diabetic-friendly, plus a host of vegetarian options. Low-calorie, low-fat and sugar-free have never tasted better.
Travel more. We cannot wait to welcome you aboard. Let’s discover together, and improve our mental acuity as we broaden our horizons.
It is, in fact, science. Good health goes beyond counting steps, calories or miles. The health benefits of travel are also connected to the immeasurable joy found in making new discoveries. We are delighted to share those discoveries with you. Here’s to good, healthy travel in 2018!
