5 Adventures You Need to Have on the 2019 World Cruise
There are countless things to see in every new place on our travel lists. Monuments, artistic masterpieces, breathtaking views, architecture baroque, gothic, contemporary and classic – all present themselves for photo ops with captions that stretch for centuries. Such sites teach, astound, intrigue and impress upon us the stories of place and time. But there’s something to be said about doing – becoming part of a new culture, even if just for a day or moment. On Crystal Serenity’s 2019 “Grand Continental Odysseys” World Cruise, we invite you to go beyond the camera roll and participate in the destinations on this 85-day journey, itself an immersion into Australia, Africa, the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.
In total, hundreds of experiences ashore will bring you inside the daily traditions and most exceptional highlights of each place. To get you started, here are five adventures that will fully immerse you in the 2019 World Cruise.
Auckland’s America’s Cup Culture – Auckland is known for its connection to sailing, in particular, the America’s Cup. Auckland served as home base to Team New Zealand, the famed sailing team who won two consecutive America’s Cup challenges – the first team outside the United States to do so. Your adventure takes you aboard one of the famed America’s Cup yachts, out of Auckland Harbour and toward the Hauraki Gulf. Throughout your sail, you’ll learn from the expert crew and have the chance to work alongside them, participating in the thrilling process of the race.
Dive with Great White Sharks (Cape Town) – There’s scuba diving, and then there’s this. Anchored approximately 20-25 minutes from the shores of Kleinbaai, where the Great White House is located, your guides will lower a specialized cage into the water and create a scent trail that will attract the elusive Great White Sharks. Your adventure begins now, as you enter the cage and watch with awe as these predators of the deep circle gracefully.
Cultural Immersion: A Visit to Mondesa Township – Conversations with local residents unfailingly offer uniquely authentic perspectives into a destination. In Mondesa Township, the stories of struggle and triumph are told on the faces of the people, who are eager to welcome visitors with open smiles. The coastal community was established during apartheid, when the people were segregated by ethnicity as they worked in nearby Swakopmund. Apartheid gone, today’s residents still embrace their hardworking past.
Cooking Lesson at Eureka Colonial House (Mauritius) – Perusing the local bounty at a central market is a wonderful way to connect with the heart of many cultures: cuisine. Take it a step further in Mauritius and explore one of the main markets through the eyes of a local chef, as your guide introduces you to the favorite vegetables and spices used in Mauritian cooking. Your next steps take you to Eureka Colonial House, where you’ll put your ingredients to delicious use in the gardens of the magnificent historic home, preparing main dishes and the region’s signature chutneys.
Sky-High Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb – You can explore this iconic Aussie city in myriad ways, as its cosmopolitan but laid-back vibe lends beautifully for relaxed wandering and adventures of all kinds. Or, you can take in Sydney’s many facets in one thrilling, adrenaline-inducing panoramic view. Such a vista comes courtesy of 360-degree vantage from the 440-foot summit of the famed Harbour Bridge, which you’ll climb (properly outfitted and guided, of course) in bold pursuit of bucket list experiences. Return to terra firma and toast to your adventure at a historic pub in the trendy Rocks neighborhood.
Crystal Serenity’s 85-day 2019 World Cruise sails from Los Angeles to Monte Carlo on January 13 and can be booked in segments of 15 to 26 days.
