THE BELLINI SISTERS BRING A BUBBLY TASTE OF VENICE THIS THIRSTY THURSDAY

Rossini Cocktail

We’re Sipping on this Venice Original and Her Strawberry Sister as We Daydream of Cruising in Italy

Bubbly and refreshing, this week’s Thirsty Thursday featured cocktail is deeply rooted in the city of its origin. The Bellini – synonymous with Venice and Harry’s Bar – was created by the bar’s founder Giuseppe Cipriani sometime in the 1930’s or 1940’s. A blend of the pureed white peaches that are grown in the summer months in Venice and Prosecco, the Bellini became a favorite among the literary corps and the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Sinclair Lewis, Orson Welles and even Alfred Hitchcock.

Its namesake, however, hails to a creative son of the city from many centuries ago. Giovanni Bellini descended from a long line of Venetian painters, but came into his own in 1479, when he was appointed the official painter of Venice and selected to paint the Great Council Hall at the Doge’s Palace. Upon mixing his first peach puree and sparkling wine concoction, Cipriani was reminded of the pale pink hues worn by a saint in one of Bellini’s works and so named the drink after the artist.

Today, the Bellini is a delicious taste of both Venice’s local agriculture and its creative culture, perfect as an alternative to a mimosa during elaborate brunches aboard Crystal ships or a refreshing afternoon toast to luxury voyages to La Serenissima. The Bellini’s strawberry “sister”, the Rossini, offers the same sweet and bubbly bite with strawberry puree instead of white peaches. Whichever Venetian classics fill your glass, we’re certain the first sip will inspire images of sailing into the famous lagoon aboard your favorite Crystal ship.
