Taste the New Twists on the Classic in Avenue Saloon
Whiskey. Vermouth. Bitters. Blended together they become a deeply smooth concoction with a mysterious history. The Manhattan was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall in the 1880’s for a posh party held at New York City’s Manhattan Club by Lady Randolph Churchill (Winston’s mother). Or maybe it wasn’t. This is one of the most popular theories going about what has become one of the most sophisticated and classic cocktails of the last hundred years. Others include a furtive figure named “Black” getting creative at the city’s Hoffman House, and still others throughout history claim to have fashioned what many bartenders consider to be the greatest cocktail ever served.
No one knows for sure where or how this favorite originated, but what is sure is that it is a consistent favorite. In the Avenue Saloons aboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity, this classic is getting a makeover. Several, actually, as Crystal’s mixologists introduce a menu of modern, oak-aged variations on the Manhattan. The new selection begins with the Crystal Manhattan Signature Cocktail, which is aged for several weeks in charred American oak and whose origin will never be up for debate, since it’s created, swizzled and served only aboard Crystal Cruises.
