THIRSTY THURSDAY: HOW A MASTER MIXOLOGIST CRAFTS THE PERFECT NEGRONI

Classic Negroni Cocktail

Modern Mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim Returns to Crystal with One of His Favorites

You may have met him personally aboard Crystal’s Wine & Food Festival voyages as he created delicious concoctions during entertaining demos. Or, you may only know him through your favorite sips featured on Crystal’s bar and cocktail menus, as “Modern Mixologist” Tony Abou-Ganim is one of the expert masterminds behind the creatively fresh beverages aboard our ships. This Thirsty Thursday, Tony is sailing virtually with us and serving up one of his favorites, the classic Negroni cocktail.

For Tony, it’s about more than the drink itself, as the stories of their origins seem to make everything a bit more delicious. The Negroni was created in Florence in 1919 by a bartender who replaced the soda water in an Americano with a kick of gin to make it a bit more interesting at the request of Count Camillo Negroni. While the Casoni Bar where it all began has long since closed, Café Giacosa sits it its place and still serves the all-spirits drink, which has been a favorite in bars in Italy and beyond, including Crystal ships, ever since.

As Tony demonstrates in the video below, the recipe is simple, but serious. While there are many variations of it, Tony maintains that “it’s not a Negroni if it doesn’t include Campari.” Those who love the cocktail are in famous company, including Ernest Hemingway and Anthony Bourdain. Those who’ve never tried it before are in for strong treat.

Classic Negroni

1oz Campari
1oz Sweet Vermouth
1oz Gin
Orange Peel

Directions:
Pour equal parts Campari, Sweet Vermouth, and Gin into etched mixing glass. Add ice to the glass and give it a quick stir. Place a 2-inch ice cube in your serving glass. Put the strainer over your mixing glass and strain the drink out into the serving glass. Cut a small swath of orange peel, twist to express over the drink, and place on top as a garnish.
