SUMMERTIME THIRSTY THURSDAYS CALL FOR PIÑA COLADAS

Pina colada recipe

Blend Up a Taste of the Islands

When the sun shines a bit later and burns a bit hotter, and your travel daydreams drift increasingly toward your favorite island paradise, it may just be time for a piña colada. Few cocktails set such a definitive mood as this blended, frothy, creamy, icy treat, which has become synonymous with its birthplace of San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the most widely accepted account of the drink’s origin, it was there that, in 1954, Caribe Hilton bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero first blended cocktail with tropical dessert and the two became the most iconic drink for any island getaway. Others have suggested that the inventor of the piña colada was not Caribbean, but rather, was Ricardo Gracia from Barcelona.

In any case, the warm summer months and our desire for island escapes have us craving one this Thirsty Thursday.

Now the national drink of Puerto Rico, the piña colada has traveled the world as the favorite choice among beachgoers craving something sweet and refreshing with a kick (and a tiny umbrella). It can be spotted on islands chaise lounges, beachfront restaurants, poolside bars and any tropically-themed soiree. Aboard Crystal ships, it’s perfect for sunny afternoons at sea by the Seahorse Pool, strolling on the top Sun Deck or lounging on your private verandah. There is no wrong way to enjoy this classic – the Caribe Hilton, in fact, has introduced plenty of variations over the years to keep things “fresh” – Crystal barkeepers recommend the tried and true pure blend of coconut cream, rum and pineapple juice.

Check out their piña colada recipe, mix and sip your way to San Juan.
