PIRANHAS & PINK DOLPHINS: THREE NIGHTS IN THE AMAZON JUNGLE

In the Brazilian municipalities of Manaus and Novo Airão and amidst the world’s largest river archipelago is the Anavilhanas National Park, a rainforest jungle that must be seen to be fully – or even partially – appreciated. Its 866,000 acres of protected land house hundreds of thousands of animal and plant species, including the similarly protected jaguar, giant armadillo, giant otter, giant anteater, Amazonian manatee and the Amazon river dolphin.

Jaguars are among the protected species that prowl the Amazon jungle.

It’s from Manaus that you’ll embark on your own journey through this lush landscape, your ultimate (temporary) destination being the Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge. The luxurious lodge is the ideal base for explorations throughout the Brazilian Amazon Reserve, in which you’ll be immersed for the next three days. When Crystal Serenity docks in Manaus on March 27, you’ll be whisked away to this rainforest haven, which will host Crystal guests in 16 cottages, six bungalows and two panoramic bungalows, built on suspended wooden structures.

We challenge you to pull yourself away from the air conditioning and swimming pool that overlooks the Rio Negro and its islands – you won’t regret it. The next three days hold endless adventure that will showcase the natural wonders of your surroundings, which presents a second challenge: choosing the perfect expedition for you.

Fish for the piranhas that teem in the Amazon waters, or greet the decidedly friendlier pink – yes, pink – dolphins where they gather to fish. Explore the channels, lakes, islands and caves that punctuate the expansive archipelago, or stick to terra firma, led by expert guides who will enlighten you on the ecosystems and survival techniques in the Amazon.

Night owls can board a motorized canoe for a moonlit exploration of the flooded forest and its resident nocturnal creatures, while early risers will relish a dawn departure for a lakeside wildlife watch. You’ll have the opportunity to navigate the many waterways throughout this Amazon region in a native-made canoe, then visit an isolated local community in Rio Negro to learn more about the lifestyle of the native people.

This Amazon jungle immersion is a brand new Crystal Overland Adventure, which will transport you from Crystal Serenity for a far-off journey not accessible by cruise ship, then return you to her spacious decks, lounges and dining rooms after your adventure. You’ll rejoin your ship in Santerém, Brazil.

First, book your luxury accommodations aboard Crystal Serenity’s “Amazon Expedition” journey from Rio De Janeiro to Barbados. Then, reserve your space to trek into the jungle.
