TOAST TO THIRSTY THURSDAY WITH A TEENIE WEENIE LIMÓN MARTINI

Lemon Martini

A Teenie Weenie Twist on the Lemon Drop Pays Homage to the Italian Coast

This week’s featured cocktail bears the rare distinction of actually resembling the destination that inspired the recipe. Crystal’s Teenie Weenie Limón Martini has every element of days spent along Italy’s Amalfi Coast – a bright, sunshiny hue; a sugared rim that glitters like the blue Adriatic; the sweetness of la dolce vita; a splash of fresh lemons, like the trees that line the avenues; and of course, Limoncello.

When considering classic Italian cuisine, images of homegrown olives and olive oil, lovingly simmered marinara and creamy mozzarella and Parmigiana cheese may first come to mind. But lemons are an integral ingredient in much of the traditional fare, and the Amalfi Coast is one of the regions where some of the sweetest, brightest and juiciest lemons are grown, the other prominent region being Sicily. Lemons are featured in everything from seafood dishes and desserts to icy liqueurs and even eaten on their own with a pinch of salt. Of course, one of the most popular lemon treats in Italy is limoncello, made from lemon zest steeped in alcohol (usually vodka), sugar and water.

There is some disagreement as to whether this classic Italian beverage originated in Amalfi, Sorrento or Capri, but we find it perfectly refreshing to drink in any one of those lovely locales. It also adds a wonderfully Italian twist to a traditional lemon drop martini, courtesy of Crystal’s barkeepers. For those moments when you’re longing to be soaking in the Adriatic sunshine on Crystal Esprit’s open decks while island hopping along the Amalfi Coast, this is the beverage of choice.
