FOR CRYSTAL SYMPHONY’S SILVIA BALD, HOME IS WHERE HER FAMILY IS

The Crystal Symphony Hotel Operations Assistant’s Spirit of Hospitality Shines Through

German, English, French, Portuguese or Chinese. In any of her five languages, Silvia Bald is happy to help. It’s been a desire ingrained into her entire educational and professional life, which began in her native Germany and saw her spend seven years studying in medical school. She excelled in her studies, but felt that something was missing. After taking time to travel, it clicked: she preferred hospitality to hospitals, and thus began her life’s new path. This path took her aboard a cruise ship for her first foray into the round-the-world lifestyle, then to the Maldives, where she worked at a resort planning weddings and special occasions. She also traveled to China, furthering her hospitality experience and exploring the language and culture… Until she realized she missed life aboard a ship and decided to embark on her next chapter aboard Crystal Symphony, where she has called home for nearly three years.

We have a core value at Crystal: You’re either someone who serves a Crystal guest, or someone who serves someone who serves a Crystal guest. Silvia – who is featured in our new brand campaignWhere Luxury is Personal– has been both, but today you’ll find her behind the scenes as Hotel Operations Assistant, right hand to the Hotel Director, Captain, Vice Captain and their teams. While she doesn’t interact with guests on a daily basis, her spirit of hospitality shines through.

“I love the feeling that I’m really taking care of somebody, that I’m helping and supporting,” she shares.

To Silvia, the onboard crew is truly family. This includes her fiancé, whom she met aboard Crystal Symphony. They are able to continue to work together aboard the ship as Crystal is one of a few cruise lines where crew members remain on the same ship rather than moving around to other vessels.

In fact, often, Crystal Family is also actual family, as many Crystal crew members are the second generation working on board,  “This really is a family,” Silvia says.

An accomplished painter and portraitist, Silvia practices her art in her free time, and also enjoys visits on board from her parents. Her future is bright, with a wedding to plan and a world of journeys ahead of her, and Silvia is happy to be home aboard Crystal Symphony, with family.
