Take Your Practice Far Beyond the Mat

Inhale, exhale, repeat. Add to this mantra some physical poses of varying levels of intensity and you have the modern iteration of the ancient practice of yoga. There are those – yogis and yoginis – who flow through vinyasa simply for the sweat, cardio and flexibility benefits, and others who prefer to focus inward, on yoga’s spiritual side. Regardless of which path your downward dog follows, yoga is one of the most travel-friendly exercise regimens out there, allowing for a kind of “have mat, will travel” convenience and simplicity.

Like yoga itself, a change of scenery can do wonders for the body and soul. In 2019, Crystal invites you to grab your mat and get moving with five dedicated yoga excursions around the world, three of them brand new this year.

Note: You don’t have to actually grab your mat. Aboard Crystal ships and during the excursions below, mats will be provided for you. You just bring the energy and breath.

Paphos, Cyprus – (NEW) An ancient practice in an ancient setting, this seaside yoga session combines flexibility, balance and beach time. Ground yourself on the sand during a class led by an expert instructor from the Anassa Hotel, then venture beyond the mat to the gardens of Poli Crysochus, where you’ll explore the health benefits and restorative traits of the herbs grown there.

Valletta, Malta – (NEW) Actually, about 20 minutes from Valletta, on Manoel Island, is where your hour-long yoga session offers views of the sunsetting over the city in the distance, and your instructor challenges you with modern interpretations of yoga, along with the ancient traditions of the practice.

Napier, New Zealand – (NEW) In the lush meadow and farmland scenery of the Mangarara Eco Lodge, the air is fresh and serene, perfect for a restorative yoga session.  Before class, enjoy a 15-minute head and shoulder massage, then begin your 80-minute class of hatha yoga and meditation – a class perfectly suited to all levels of yoga practice. Next, refuel with an elaborate feast in the countryside.

Puerto Limón, Costa Rica – Refresh your routine at Le Camaleon Resort with a multi-style yoga session focused on vinyasa flow. Beachfront tranquility and treetop breezes set a zen vibe, while the vigorous practice invigorates your mind and muscles. Your yoga experience is balanced by time at your leisure to dip in the ocean and a visit to Puerto Viejo, where reggae and calypso beats fill the colorful streets.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – For a spectacular combination of cardio, strength, yoga and jaw-dropping beauty, the St. Thomas Mangrove Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary & Marine Reserve could not be a more perfect setting. Depart the shore on your stand-up paddle board, winding your way through mangrove tunnels, keeping watch for nesting birds above and colorful fish below. A protected lagoon along your route becomes your yoga studio, where you’ll challenge your balance – inward and outward – moving through poses on your board. Keep your blood flowing with snorkeling, swimming and more paddling following your flow.

Bonus: Crystal ships’ Fitness Centers offer a bevy of guided fitness classes, including yoga, allowing you to maximize your practice virtually anywhere in the world.
