Medley by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole to follow What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong in new extended sail-away tradition
The votes are in, Crystal’s guests have spoken and the Somewhere Over the Rainbow & What a Wonderful World medley by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole will now directly follow Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World, as the second song in Crystal Endeavor’s sail-away celebration, giving the intrepid new expedition yacht a sail-away tradition all her own. Nearly 500 guests voted in the contest to choose the second sail-away song which will expand the length of the beloved sail-away celebration on Crystal Endeavor with a new favorite chosen by the line’s loyal guests.
What began as a lovely added touch in 1990, when Crystal Harmony first left San Francisco harbor on its maiden voyage has become a longstanding tradition beloved by the award-winning line’s loyal guests. The sail-away song is the musical backdrop for the sublime moment of emotion and anticipation as travelers stand on the open decks as the ship departs toasting new adventures to come. It was fitting that Crystal’s past guests chose a personally meaningful song for Crystal Endeavor as they helped create this special sail-away tradition and the moment truly belongs to them.
“We are thrilled to have so many guests participate, and I must admit that I am personally delighted by their choice” said Keith Cox, Crystal’s vice president of entertainment. “That beautiful song medley captures so many emotions all at once, from the deep appreciation of the world’s beauty that exploration brings to the anticipation and excitement you feel as you leave the harbor to discover what wonders wait beyond the horizon. Crystal Endeavor is going to take guests on explorations to the farthest reaches of the globe and beyond anything we’ve experienced before, which makes this song of limitless possibilities so fitting.”
Earlier this month guests were asked to vote for a second sail-away song for Endeavor from a list of five song selections chosen from the Crystal: Sailing Through 30 Years playlist, a compilation of guest favorites available for download on Spotify. The choices included Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin; Sailing by Christopher Cross; Time to Say Goodbye by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli; and In the Groove by Richard Elliot; and of course, the Somewhere Over the Rainbow & What a Wonderful World medley by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, which emerged as the winner. Thank you to everyone who voted.
“For guest who voted for one of the other song favorites, we heard you too,” explained Cox. “All of these songs are mainstays throughout our fleet, and I would not be surprised if you heard them again during a future voyage. Luckily, we can listen to the Crystal playlist whenever we feel that wanderlust, until one day soon when we’re able to stand together on those open decks again.”
Be there on the open deck to toast Crystal Endeavor as she embarks upon her inaugural voyages this summer with Luxury Iceland Expeditions five consecutive 10-night voyages of exploration and discovery circumnavigating Iceland and exploring the Arctic Circle round-trip from Reykjavík, beginning July 17, 2021. Followed by followed by the 10-night Journey of Vikings: Iceland & Norway from Reykjavík to Tromsø departing September 5, 2021.
