Crystal Expedition Cruises’ new luxury expedition yacht Crystal Endeavor just completed her maiden voyage and first circumnavigation of Iceland. Yesterday she set off from Reykjavík for her second voyage as part of her inaugural Luxury Iceland Expeditions series.

Leading guests on intrepid land and sea adventures were Expedition Leaders and Polar Expedition experts Boris Wise and Eva Molin Westerholm together with a roster of specialists and expert guides including marine biologist Lisa LaPoint, ornithologist Joe Cockram, glaciologist and geologist Bob Gilmore, historian Capt. Ken Burton, artist-in-residence Bruce Pearson and professional photographers Bruno Cazarini and Roger Pimenta.

Cazarini and Pimenta shared a series of photo dispatches from their first 10 days aboard Crystal Endeavor’s maiden voyage sailing round-trip from Reykjavík in the “Land of Fire and Ice”. We are excited to share these striking Icelandic landscapes and expedition experiences with you!

Guests hike up a mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula 45 minutes outside of Reykjavík, to gain a better view of Geldingadalur Volcano. The eruption began earlier this year on March 19, with a spectacular display of molten lava shooting up and flowing out in rivers across the landscape. In the distance you can see the volcanic moonscape created by the eruption.

This amazing view of the smoldering caldera of Geldingadalur Volcano shows the details and patterns created by the lava flow, the first eruption in the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark in at least 800 years. The lava from this volcano comes from a deep magma chamber which is usually only found at the bottom of ocean rifts.

Crystal Endeavor cruises into the glacier-carved fjord of Vopnafjörđur settled by the Vikings in the late 9th Century. During the last Ice Age, a large glacier carved the landscape into the different mountains and rock formations that characterize the peninsula today.
